Incredible painting. You are extremely talented, Susan. I see that you work with both oil and watercolor, which do you prefer? I’ve never tried oil painting but this piece makes me want to try! L/F

Susan Blackwood replied:

Thank you so much Michael. I love both mediums. Watercolors has an incredible way of glowing because of the nature of the translucent layers. I painted and taught watercolors for 32 years before I added oils to my tool box. Oils give me the rich darks. I can pop an oil painting into a frame immediately, unlike watercolors that typically needs a frame and glass. However, I am exploring the use of special varnish on watercolors so they don't need mats or glass. I have painted on canvas mounted on gator board as well as stretched canvas. I love both ways. I love how easy it is to fix an oil. But I love the spontaneous nature of watercolors because each step of the way, It talks to me. In Montana it was much easier to sell an oil than a watercolor. The colder climates love darker colors. The warmer climates buy more watercolors and they fit in people's home that are light and airy. So, you see each has it's reasons for me to love it. Try oils, you will love what it does for your dark areas! Than

Artist's Description

These stately old pines lined the edge of an old dirt road, once used for horse-pulled wagons. It still sits catching the sun and parting the trees, unused for decades, except for the creatures of the forest. I could just image a handsome bull elk, leading his ladies through this scene in he Rocky Mountains of Montana.

About Susan Blackwood

Susan Blackwood

I love to paint and draw. I have been a professional artist and art instructor since the early 1970's. For 32 years, I was a professional watercolorist. In the late 1970s, throughout the 1980's I sold limited edition prints of my watercolor paintings nationally and internationally, (first as Susan Zabinski and later as Susan Blackwood). In 2003, I added another medium to her professional work. I ventured forth into the thick and gooey medium of oils and love it, too. My watercolors and oils have been in many national shows and museums, winning top awards and featured in articles and on covers of several national art magazines. In 2010 I won Best of Show at the American Women Artists National Exhibition. I paints all subject matter, using...
