Incredible painting. You are extremely talented, Susan. I see that you work with both oil and watercolor, which do you prefer? I’ve never tried oil painting but this piece makes me want to try! L/F

Susan Blackwood replied:

Thank you so much Michael. I love both mediums. Watercolors has an incredible way of glowing because of the nature of the translucent layers. I painted and taught watercolors for 32 years before I added oils to my tool box. Oils give me the rich darks. I can pop an oil painting into a frame immediately, unlike watercolors that typically needs a frame and glass. However, I am exploring the use of special varnish on watercolors so they don't need mats or glass. I have painted on canvas mounted on gator board as well as stretched canvas. I love both ways. I love how easy it is to fix an oil. But I love the spontaneous nature of watercolors because each step of the way, It talks to me. In Montana it was much easier to sell an oil than a watercolor. The colder climates love darker colors. The warmer climates buy more watercolors and they fit in people's home that are light and airy. So, you see each has it's reasons for me to love it. Try oils, you will love what it does for your dark areas! Than
